President's Letter

Welcome and happy summer,

I am delighted to write this letter to the NARACES membership as one of my first responsibilities as the incoming President. Although our North Atlantic region is comparatively small in numbers, we are fortunate to have a strong foundation of past leadership that grounds and guides our current activities. It is then of no surprise that our membership chair, Tracy Stinchfield reports that our NARACES membership continues to grow!

As you all are aware, our past President Holly Branthoover organized a phenomenal conference last fall in Providence, RI where we had higher attendance than any past conference in our region. Along with many of you, I have been working with Holly to plan and prepare for the 2015 ACES Conference in Philadelphia, PA on October 7-11. Hosting the ACES conference is our region is a tremendous honor and opportunity for us all. There is still time to register if you have not done so already.

We are very pleased that Megan Krell has returned to the NARACES board, agreeing to serve as the Treasurer. Her service to the organization began as a graduate student and has expanded over time (past past secretary), modeling the leadership development opportunities we hope to continue in the organization.

We also congratulate Derek Seward, our past secretary, on his recent election as NARACES President elect.  Under Derek’s leadership, we have already begun preparation for our NARACES 2016 conference that will be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Syracuse, NY on September 20-25, 2016. There are numerous committees that have been formed in preparation, and those interested in volunteering to serve on a committee can contact Derek at

I am also appreciative that our past past President, Tracey Robert has continued her diligent work to further develop our NARACES Emerging Leaders programming, as well as organize efforts related to raising the profile of Supervision in our region. We are extremely fortunate, thanks to the work of Nicole Pulliam and Jennifer Parzycha, to have a stellar quarterly newsletter that features important developments in the field, highlights current happenings, and documents critical information in our region. This, combined with increased student involvement organized by Graduate representative Hennessey Lustica, our Teaching excellence committee previously led by Krista Mallot and now headed by Nicole Hill, and our active Research Network and Awards program, both chaired by Mike Mariksa, we have been able to offer NARACES members a variety of meaningful programs, resources, and activities.

Related, our journal, The Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision, edited by our current NARACES secretary, Edina Renfro-Michel, has become a model for other regions interested in developing a similar publication. Please consider submitting to the journal and/or serving as an editorial board member and reviewer.

In sum, I look forward to continuing to steward the mission of NARACES to support the growth of members, as well as the profession. Accordingly, I intend that communication, collaboration, and compassion undergird my leadership. Please feel free to contact me at with any ideas and input as we move forward.
